Immunologists James Ellison from the USA and Tasuka Hondso from Japan received the Nobel Prize for Medicine 2018 for the study, revolutionizing cancer treatment.
According to the Nobel Committee, scientists were awarded for the opening of cancer treatment by suppressing negative immune regulation.
Therapy inhibition of control points of immunity is aimed at proteins produced by some cells of the immune system, as well as some cancer cells. These proteins may not give natural protective mechanisms to kill cancer cells. Therapy is designed to abolish this protein "brake" so that the immune system can quickly begin to combat cancer.
Professor of Texas University James Ellison and Professor Kyoto University Tasuka Hondso received for their study the Tang Prize (Asian version of Nobeli). Scientists share a prize fund, the amount of which is nine million Swedish kroons (about $ 1.01 million or 870 thousand euros).
The award scientist will issue King Karl XVI Gustav at a solemn ceremony, which traditionally passes in Stockholm on December 10 – on the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the Founder of the Prize.
